Born in Florence in 1856 to American parents, John Singer Sargent was considered a leading portrait painter of the Victorian era.
His portrayal of elegant sitters in sumptuous surroundings, made him extremely popular with wealthy patrons on both sides of the Atlantic.
Repose, painted in 1911 depicts Rose-Marie Ormand his niece casually reclining in a relaxed state of contemplation, draped across a chair in luxurious fabrics.
