I have been painting my home city of Birmingham for twenty five years now, and a few other places from my travels along the way, but it is always my immediate surroundings which inspire me the most.
Just like the many different facets of Birmingham, I enjoy capturing many different aspects of the city, from brightly lit neon high streets, especially in rainy conditions, to the gritty suburbs of the city. I also enjoy focusing on the balance between natural and man made elements of the city.
I never try to glamorise anything, I am a realist at heart and I see beauty in all aspects of the city, whether it be through light, either natural or artificial, or even some of the more forgotten about and down trodden parts of Birmingham. I am proud of our industrial heritage, both my parents and grandparents worked in manufacturing in some of Birmingham's many factories and this has shaped both the city in which we live and the person, and artist who I am. I like my work to to be factual rather than conceptual, to be real rather than hyperthetical.
I have always worked primarily in oil paint or charcoal drawings as I find they both provide a wide range of techniques to utilise in order to represent whatever it is that I am trying to convey, this has led to much exprimentation, and frustration over the years and I wouldn't have it any other way, it means that my art truly is my own.
