Description
French painter Gustave Caillebotte was born in Paris in 1848.
He became a member of the 'Impressionist' group of painters exhibiting alongside Claude Monet and Pierre Auguste-Renoir.
Much of his work explores the impact of the sesaons and light on the urban environment and this painting is a fitting example.
Completed in the winter of 1878-1879 it features the rooftops of Monmartre covered in snow. He has used a high vantage point giving the viewer a unique perspective of Paris.
Executed with a monochromatic palette of greys and blues, it highlights the snow and architecture of the city under wintry conditions.
This painting is housed in the Musee d' Orsay in Paris.
