Italian artist Giuseppe De Nittis was born in Barletta, Italy in 1846.
Along with his companions Edgar Degas, Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro he exhibited at The First Impressionist Exhibition in Paris in 1874.
Lady on A Red Divan also known as 'Signora sul divano rosso' depicts an elegant woman resting on a red sofa.
The sophisticated sitter is dressed in dark clothing, silhouetted against the vibrant background, it captures a moment in time and the play of light and shadow.
A fine example of his impressionistic style of painting.
