Description
From 1887 to 1890 Monet made paintings of the River Epte which skirted his property in Giverny.
Two sisters posed for these works, their father being a patron and collector of Monet's work.
This image captures a quiet moment of leisure on the river. The figures in the boat dressed in white are highlighted against the leafy branches and rippling dark green surface of the water.
The composition is spontaneous and emphasises the motion of the boat.
