Description
British painter Alfred Sisley was born in Paris in 1839.
He was the most consistent of the Impressionist painters in his dedication to painting landscape en plein air (ie; outdoors).
Sisley became good friends with other notable impressionists including Claude Monet and Pierre Auguste-Renoir and together they would paint outdoors in their quest to capture the transient effects of light on the landscape.
Sisley was particularly attracted to the countryside in Winter.
This painting depicts a snow-covered landscape, the branches on the trees carry the weight of the snow, a solitary central figure can be seen walking away in the distance. The road disappears into the delicate landscape and there is a sense of stillness synonymous with a recent heavy snowfall.
