L'art pour l'art. (art for art's sake), a French slogan from the latter half of the 19th century, is a phrase that expresses the philosophy that 'true' art is utterly independent of all social values and utilitarian functions, be they didactic, moral, or political.
I have always been drawn to the aesthetic of a painting first and foremost, and with every painting I begin, my aim is to represent something which I deem to be beautiful. Another step on the quest for perfection, in search of the lost chord.
I draw inspiration from my surroundings, or places that I have visited, to which extent that my body of work is autobiographical, but whilst the subject matter provides the initial excitement enough to want to undertake a new painting, it is the time spent painting it which is truly rewarding. I probably enjoy the journey more than the destination.
After a career spanning twenty-five years my ethos is unchanged constantly looking for new and interesting subjects to paint and constantly evolving as an artist.
